Based in Jakarta, Abie Abillah is passionate about working with rattan and has been designing and creating contemporary rattan furniture since his college days. With 80 percent of the world’s supply of rattan coming from Indonesia, Abie aims to rejuvenate the interest in rattan as a material for furniture once again through his designs. Abie’s designs are aimed at championing and reviving Indonesia’s rattan industry. Focusing on the material’s strength and flexibility, the designer creates his final products by combining modular units of bent pieces into well-ordered shapes. Many of Abie’s pieces have been exhibited in countries such as Germany, Jakarta and Indonesia. He was featured as one of the rising Asian talents at Maison et Objet Asia 2015. More recently at Milan Design Week 2016, Cappellini launched its debut collaboration with Abie Abdillah – about a year after Giulio Cappellini spotted Abdillah's work in Jakarta.
